Embracing Personal Control in an Unpredictable World

On my blog, I’ve made it a personal rule to steer clear of topics that often ignite heated debates, such as politics or religion. The internet is a vast space where diverse beliefs and perspectives collide, and my goal has always been to create a haven, a safe, welcoming corner where readers can connect without fear of conflict or judgment.

That said, last week’s election brought a wave of emotions for many people. While I won’t delve into the specifics of the election or its outcomes, I do want to explore something more universal and personal: Control.

The Struggle for Control

Many of us felt overwhelmed by stress and uncertainty last week. Personally, I’ve been juggling multiple responsibilities in my life, trying to find a balance but often falling short. Even this past weekend, I intended to relax, yet I ended up checking off task after task from my never-ending to-do list. Though I accomplished a lot, I neglected to recharge, which only added to my sense of exhaustion.

But let’s refocus on what matters: Control. Life is inherently unpredictable. Circumstances shift, people come and go, and often we’re left feeling like we’re passengers in our own lives, swept along by forces beyond our influence. Prince captured this sentiment perfectly in his song Colonized Mind: “Illusion of choice.”

Last Wednesday, I had an important realization: the only real control we have is over ourselves, our actions, our reactions, and how we choose to spend our time. My husband and I decided to shift our focus entirely to what we can control, letting go of the things that are beyond our reach.

Reclaiming Control: A Plan for the Holidays

With the holiday season approaching, we’re setting clear intentions:

  1. Prioritize Joy and Connection: We’ll spend quality time together, engaging in activities that truly bring us happiness—whether it’s decorating for the season, enjoying cozy movie nights, or simply sharing heartfelt conversations.
  2. Set Boundaries with Social Media: The constant barrage of news and opinions on social platforms can be overwhelming. We plan to limit our exposure and explore other ways to disconnect, such as reading, crafting, or going for walks.
  3. Carve Out Time for Rest: Productivity is important, but so is rest. We’re committing to scheduling downtime, ensuring we both have moments to relax and recharge, guilt-free.
  4. Practice Mindfulness: By focusing on the present and appreciating small, everyday joys, we hope to cultivate a sense of peace and gratitude, even amid life’s uncertainties.

Tips for Taking Control of Your Life

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, here are a few strategies that might help you regain a sense of control:

  • Identify What You Can Control: Make a list of things within your power (e.g., your daily routine, your responses to challenges) and focus your energy there.
  • Set Boundaries: Protect your mental space by limiting exposure to stressors, whether it’s social media, toxic relationships, or overcommitment.
  • Create a Self-Care Routine: Dedicate time to activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul, whether it’s meditation, exercise, or creative pursuits.
  • Practice Gratitude: Reflect on the positive aspects of your life. Gratitude can shift your perspective and reduce feelings of helplessness.
  • Learn to Let Go: Accept that some things are beyond your control. By releasing the need to control everything, you free yourself from unnecessary stress.

Remember, life’s unpredictability doesn’t have to leave you feeling powerless. By focusing on what you can control and being intentional with your time and energy, you can create a sense of stability and peace, even in turbulent times.
