In 2018 Netflix premiered a beautiful and heartful anime called Violet Evergarden. I was instantly in love with the gorgeous animation but even more by the story of Violet Evergarden and her journey to acclimate into society after a major war is over and she searches for purpose now that she’s no longer a soldier in order to understand the last words her Commanding Officer Major Gilbert told her: “I love you.”

Spoilers Ahead:

From the beginning of the series, you are pulled into the tragic circumstance of Violet as she circumvents through society trying to understand humanity while also figuring out where she fits in the world if she fits in at all. The most heart-wrenching part of the series is when she finally comes to terms with the Major’s death while at the same time understanding what his last words to her meant.

Seeing her character grow from an unemotional machine to a girl who has lost everything but goes on living despite that loss is such a beautiful journey as she learns to love from all the people that she helps.

What has always been a little sad for me in regards to the series was even though she eventually realized how much she loved the Major she would never be able to tell him.

After the series aired they released a couple of movies with the last one releasing yesterday and here is where things get really interesting.

Here is what made me really happy about the latest film, even though I loved the series and it will always be one of my favorites it also made me a little sad to watch it but this last film revealed something so amazing that I was riding a happy high for the rest of the afternoon.

About a third of the way into the film it’s revealed that the Major actually survived the war but felt he that he would never be good for her or deserve her. In all honesty, I remember watching the original series wishing in the back of my head then at some point we would learn he survived but as the series progressed I gave in to the fact that it would never happen. And then he was no longer dead, and then there was a little bit of drama and tears and then they were i each other’s arms.

So when this film came out I felt like my wishes for this series came true and I felt so happy for the characters that I invested my time in. It was so wonderful to see them both get their happy ending.
